The Foodservice Packaging Association has argued that an EU attempt to ban Expanded
Polystyrene (EPS) is unfair.
FPA's executive director Martin Kersh
The industry body was responding to single-use plastics directive, which aims to ban the material. But Martin Kersh, executive director at the FPA, warned that the EPS was being “singled out and treated unfairly”. He wants the EU to move the material from the banned list to the material reduction list.
He said: “Whilst we fully understand and support the need to reduce land and marine litter and protect the environment, foodservice EPS was ranked 28 in the list of most frequently found items of marine litter and is well below many other items that are littered and are not on the banned list. We are also concerned that this ban affects those least able to afford to switch to more expensive substitutes. This type of material is most commonly used by independent take-aways and mobile caters, whose customers are least able to afford a price hike.
“Although the text of the Directive has been approved, the there is scope to move an amend to the Directive at the Plenary at the end of March and we are seeking the help of relevant MEPs to support this amend.”
If approved, the ban will come into effect from 2021.
